New Delhi: Sheetal Devi, the worldwide sensation, has inspired millions across the globe with her sensational performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. The only armless archer at the Games attracted global attention with an extraordinary display of marksmanship that mesmerised the fans, experts and even some famous non-sports personalities.
The 17-year-old Jammu and Kashmir para-athlete, who became a symbol of grit and determination, inspired her fellow athletes in Paris by winning a medal on the biggest stage.
Inspired by Sheetal’s success, a 13-year-old girl, who hails from the same Loidhar village as the para-athlete, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar region, has taken up training in achery. A video is going viral on social media which shows her training under the guidance of coach Kuldeep Vedwan. The girl, remarkably, has no arms and legs.
In the video, Vedwan can be seen helping the teenager put on a specially designed prosthetic bow, specifically crafted for para-archery. The bow is similar to the one Sheetal Devi uses in her competitive games. The girl’s mental strength and determination to pursue her dream, despite the challenges, has sparked emotional reactions on social media besides drawing comparisons to her idol, Sheetal Devi.

Sheetal Devi’s instant impact
Sheetal, perhaps, was one of the most if not the most popular athlete at the Paralympics. She got international fame after hitting the bull’s-eye with an extraordinary shot. Sheetal scripted history by claiming the bronze medal with Rakesh Kumar in the mixed team compound open archery event.
Sheetal was born in 2007 without any arms due to a medical condition called phocomelia. She took up archery after figuring out a unique way to hold the bow with one foot and pull back the string with her.
Like Sheetal, India also enjoyed a sensational campaign at the Paris Paralympics, clinching a record-breaking 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver and 13 bronze.
