New Delhi: Reckitt Benckiser, the world’s biggest condom maker, has been vigorously marketing its condom products in the Indian market for years. After luring Indian men to its Durex brand, the company is focussing on targeting the women and rural consumers of the country.
Reuters reported that the Indian government estimates that only 10 per cent of the male population uses condoms, while women opt for sterilisation for contraception. The agency mentioned that Indian women’s attitude towards sex is changing and Reckitt is shifting its marketing plans to market its sexual wellness products amongst women.
The agency quoted government figures stating that around 9.5 per cent of married Indian women used condoms during sex by 2021, which was almost double the use five years earlier. The percentage was quite higher among unmarried women – it was 27 per cent.
Reckitt Benckiser faces stiff competition from Mankind Pharma, which leads the Indian condom market share.
Reuters reported that India’s condom market size is very less compared to China. India’s condom market is worth $210 million, compared to China’s $4.1 billion. However, it is projected to grow at 7.4% compound annual rate between 2024 and 2030, according to Indian consulting firm 6Wresearch.
Durex conducted a Global Sex Survey in celebration of its 95th anniversary which revealed significant trends and changes in sexual health and wellbeing. “India tops the charts with the highest satisfaction rates: 76% of respondents in India feel physically satisfied, and 73% are emotionally satisfied. Those using Durex products report 25% higher satisfaction rates than those who don’t,” the survey mentioned.
