Six famous people who have won the Nobel Peace Prize
1. Mother Teresa
She was a Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity. Born in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire, she spent most of her life in India where she worked for the upliftment of the downtrodden and the orphans. She founded the Missionaries of Charity which worked for “the poorest of the poor” in the slums of Kolkata. Today, it operates in more than 130 countries, working for those people who are in desperate need of help. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
2. Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt was the President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He was committed to law and order, civic duty, and military values. The youngest President in US history, Roosevelt worked to improve the lives of common people and established national parks, forests, and monuments to preserve the natural resources of the country. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 due to his successful efforts to end the war between the Russian Empire and the Japanese Empire.
3. Barack Obama
Barack Obama was the President of the US from 2009 to 2017. It was during his presidency that the dreaded terrorist Osama Bin Laden was killed. Also, he took several steps to fight climate change and signed the Paris Agreement and an executive order to limit carbon emissions. He also led the recovery of the US economy after the Great Recession and is generally considered one of the greatest US Presidents.
4. Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as South Africa’s first President from 1994 to 1999. He was also South Africa’s first Black head of state. Mandela was the key figure in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. His administration focused on fostering racial reconciliation and removing any kind of discrimination. He spent 27 years in prison during his fight against apartheid. He is considered all over the world as an icon of democracy and social justice and is hailed as the “Father of the Nation” in South Africa.
5. Kofi Annan
Kofi Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who was the UN Secretary-General from 1997 to 2006. In 2001, he and the UN became the co-recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. He changed the UN bureaucracy and led the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. Also, he launched the UN Global Compact and founded the Kofi Annan Foundation in 2007.
6. 14th Dalai Lama
He is Tibetan Buddhism’s highest spiritual leader and head. He preaches the teachings of Lord Buddha all over the world and attends conferences on a wide range of subjects. The works of the 14th Dalai Lama revolve around the welfare of people, the rights of women, the environment, economics, nonviolence, interfaith dialogue, astronomy, and cognitive neuroscience.
