New Delhi: Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi has landed in a serious controversy as he has been accused of misbehaving with the coaching staff and team management during the team’s recent tours, including the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. The shocking revelations come at a time when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning a major overhaul in the setup after the team’s dismal show in the T20 World Cup.
As per a report in Geo News, Afridi misbehaved with Pakistan’s coaches and team management, failing to comply with the team’s protocols during their recent tours. Pakistan toured Ireland and England before heading to the USA for the T20 World Cup 2024. The incidents are said to have taken place on these tours.
While the allegations are serious in nature, the details of the misconduct are not known. As per the report, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sacked team manager Mansoor Rana and senior team manager Wahab Riaz after learning about Afridi’s behaviour during their investigation. The team managers were sacked as no action was taken against Afridi despite his poor behaviour.
The shocking allegations not only raise questions about Afridi’s conduct but also raise questions about the PCB. It was the Pakistan Cricket Board which appointed Afridi as the captain of the Pakistan team in the limited-overs formats following Babar Azam’s sacking post the ODI World Cup last year. However, Afridi was later removed as Babar returned as captain for the T20 World Cup.
During the T20 World Cup reports had claimed that all was not well between Babar and Shaheen and that the duo was not on speaking terms during the tournament. Pakistan endured a horror outing in the T20 World Cup 2024 as they were eliminated from the group stage after suffering back-to-back defeats against USA and India.
Action against lobbies in the team
As per the report in Geo News, the Pakistan Cricket Board has also learned that the players have formed lobbies in the squad. The matter is being investigated by the board and action will be taken against those found guilty.
The coaches in the Pakistan team have also made the board aware of the non-serious attitude of some players in the team. They have also accused the players of speaking against each other behind the back of their teammates which spoils the environment of the entire squad.
Shaheen Afridi reportedly ‘misbehaved’ with Pakistan coaches and the team management during the team’s tours. While the details of the incidents are not known, Afridi is said to have not complied with the coaches suggestions and team’s protocols during the last few series.
