New Delhi: Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli’s recent video of his awkward reunion with his childhood friend and former teammate Sachin Tendulkar, sparked concerns regarding his mental and physical well-being and overall health. It’s no secret that Kambli has been dealing with multiple health issues due to his alcohol addiction among other problems.
Kambli recently met Tendulkar in Mumbai during an event commemorating the legacy of late cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar, who mentored the duo. In a video that viral from the incident, 52-year-old Kambli appeared to be frail and far from in good health as he held Tendulkar’s hand and didn’t want to let him go.
This was not the first time Kambli garnered headlines due to his poor health and overall condition. A video of the former India batter from Mumbai had gone viral earlier this year where he was spotted struggling to walk on the street and get his balance right while standing. He had to be supported by some bystanders to be able to walk.
Two friends Sachin & Kambli, bonded since school days, both gifted with extraordinary talent. From playing together on dusty streets to making history, one became a global legend, the other a reminder of unrealized potential.

Kambli was once regarded as one of the most talented batters in the country with some even considering him a better talent than the legendary Tendulkar. However, Kambli could never fulfil his potential at the highest level. He played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs in his international career, amassing 1084 and 2477 runs in the two formats, respectively.
Kohli has been involved in numerous controversies off the field post his retirement from cricket and by his own admission is struggling to make ends meet for his family. He was without work for a number of years before being offered a job by his childhood friend Tendulkar at his Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy in Mumbai. However, Kambli didn’t last long on the job.
Why Vinod Kambli left job at Sachin Tendulkar’s academy?
Kambli was roped in as a mentor by Tendulkar when he launched the Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy in partnership with English county club Middlesex. Kambli’s job was to mentor young kids and budding cricketers at the academy and help them shape their cricketing careers. However, Kambli decided to leave the academy citing a long distance from his home.
Kambli said the commute from his home to Nerul, where the academy is situated was a long one and causing physical fatigue. The former India batter felt Nerul was too far to travel for the job and thus decided to leave.
“I used to wake up at 5am, take a cab to DY Patil Stadium. It was very hectic. I would then coach at the BKC ground in the evening,” Kambli told Mid-Day.
How much pension is Vinod Kambli earning?
Kambli has previously revealed he is completely dependent on the pension he receives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as an ex-India cricketer due to having no work. The former batter gets Rs 30,000 per month from the board is entirely dependent on the pension amount to make ends meet for himself and his family.
“I am a retired cricketer, who is completely dependent on the pension from the BCCI. My only payment at the moment is from the Board, for which I am really thankful and grateful. It takes care of my family,” Kambli revealed.
