Shreyas Iyer breaks MS Dhoni’s captaincy record after Punjab Kings beat LSG in IPL 2025

New Delhi: Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer broke MS Dhoni’s record after leading his team to their second consecutive win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Tuesday, April 01. Iyer scored an unbeaten half-century to help Punjab Kings chase down the target of 172 runs comfortably and beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 8 wickets at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Punjab Kings produced a superb all-round performance to outclass LSG in their own backyard. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh continued his impressive run with the ball as he picked up a three-wicket haul to help PBKS restrict Lucknow to 171/7 in 20 overs. Punjab then rode on two cracking half-centuries from opener Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Iyer to make light work of the 172-run target.

The win helped Punjab Kings continue their unbeaten run in IPL 2025 and move to the second spot on the points table. It also helped Iyer surpass Dhoni in the elite list of captains with the most consecutive victories in IPL history. Punjab Kings’ 8-wicket win against LSG was Iyer’s 8th in a row as captain, including six wins with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last season. He went past Dhoni, who won seven matches in a row for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2013.

Iyer also matched the legendary Shane Warne’s feat of 8 wins in a row as captain for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2008. Dhoni features thrice in the elite list, having led CSK to six consecutive wins twice in 2014 and 2019, with seven wins in a row in 2013 being his best for CSK. Former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir is on the top with 10 wins in a row for KKR in 2014-15.

Most consecutive wins as captain in IPL:

10 – Gautam Gambhir (Kolkata Knight Riders) – 2014-15

8 – Shane Warne (Rajasthan Royals) – 2008

8 – Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings) – 2024-25

7 – MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) – 2013

6 – Gautam Gambhir (Kolkata Knight Riders) – 2012

6 – MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) – 2014

6 – Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – 2018

6 – MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) – 2019

6 – Faf du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) – 2024

Shreyas Iyer in red-hot form for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025

Iyer has been in red-hot form for Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025 with back-to-back half-centuries in the first two matches of the season. PBKS spent a whopping Rs 26.75 crore to sign the batter in the IPL 2025 mega auction last year, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history. Iyer was subsequently appointed the captain of the side.

He has repaid the faith shown in him by the team management with impressive performances in IPL 2025. Iyer hammered an unbeaten 97 to help Punjab Kings beat Gujarat Titans in their opening game of the season and followed it up with an unbeaten 52 off 30 balls against LSG on Tuesday. PBKS have won two games in a row and will be hoping to continue their winning run in their next game against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday, April 05.

Shreyas Iyer surpassed the legendary MS Dhoni in an elite list after leading Punjab Kings to a thumping victory against Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Tuesday.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
