Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant centuries help India set mammoth target for Bangladesh

New Delhi: Team India declared their second innings at 287 for four in the afternoon of Saturday against Bangladesh on the third day of the ongoing first Test match played at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The visitors were set with an arduous target of 515 to chase in the second innings.

Resuming from the overnight scores of 81/3, India continued to dominate on the morning of the day three with Rishabh Pant, who made his comeback in Test cricket after almost 21 months, led the carnage against the Bangladesh bowling attack.

Making a splendid return to Test cricket after 634 days following his horrific car crash in December 2022, Pant showcased his trademark strokeplay, bringing up his sixth Test century off just 124 balls. He equalled the record of former India captain MS Dhoni for most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter.

Pant was dismissed on 109 from 128 balls after going for the big hit only to return a catch to Bangladesh spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz off his own bowling in the 56th over. The southpaw belted 13 fours and four sixes from his willow in a vintage knock.

Following Pant’s dismissal , Gill reached his fifth Test century, taking 161 balls to get there. Gill faced 176 balls in his innings, hitting 10 shots to the fence and four over it. KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 22 runs from 19 balls with four boundaries witnessed in his short innings.

Bangladesh openers start proceedings on bright note

Bangladesh opening pair of Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan showed some quality batting against the fiery pace attack of India comprising Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Zakir opened his hands with four boundaries and a six in the first seven overs, starting the innings with two fours off Bumrah in the first over itself. Zakir then smashed Siraj for a six and two boundaries in the sixth over. Bangladesh were batting at 46 for no loss after nine overs.
