SLC chief Shammi Silva replaces Jay Shah as Asian Cricket Council president

New Delhi: Sri Lanka cricket chief Shammi Silva has replaced Jay Shah as the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Friday. The ACC confirmed the same via release on December 6 that Silva will take charge from the outgoing president Shah, who assumed his new role as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman on December 1.

Shah, who was the former ACC head and the BCCI secretary, paid his first visit to the ICC headquarters on December 5 and considering the importance of his position as the global governing body chief, he had to step down from his other two positions at the BCCI and ACC. Shah had vacated the position after three terms as ACC President.

Silva’s long association with ACC

This won’t be Silva’s first role with the ACC as he has previously functioned as the chairman of the organisation’s Finance & Marketing Committee. So the Sri Lanka has a fair idea about how the ACC runs as an organisation and he assuming the role of the head is considered to be a big boon for the ACC. Silva said that it’s a great honour to lead the Asian Cricket Council and he looks forward to working closely with all the other members.

“It is a great honour to lead the Asian Cricket Council. Cricket is the heartbeat of Asia, and I look forward to working closely with all member nations to elevate the game, provide opportunities for emerging talent, and strengthen the bonds that unite us through this beautiful sport,” said Silva in a statement.

On behalf of the organisation, Silva also extended heartfelt thanks to Shah for his remarkable leadership and significant contributions during his tenure as the ACC boss. The Sri Lankan’s tenure begins at a crucial time, with the body focusing on the upcoming Asia Cup and working hard towards strengthening Asia’s position in global cricket.
