New Delhi: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is reportedly set to join the protests in his hometown Kolkata against the rape and murder of a junior doctor in the city’s RG Kar Hospital. The gruesome crime has sparked massive outrage with protests happening across the nation, demanding justice for the victim. Days after being criticised for his comments on the shocking crime, Ganguly has decided to hit the streets in Kolkata.
As per reports, Ganguly will also be joined by his wife Dona Ganguly in the protest march that is likely to take place on Wednesday, August 21. This comes after Ganguly recently blacked out his DP on his social media handles to express solidarity with those demanding justice for the victim. Dona Ganguly, who runs a dance academy in the city, confirmed that girls from the academy will also join the protests.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, Dona revealed the students at her academy also wanted to express their solidarity with the protests in demanding justice for the victim and that she has decided to walk with them. Ganguly will also join his wife in the protest march.
On Monday, Ganguly changed his display pictures on his social media handles to the colour black, joining thousands of others who are demanding justice for the victim by blacking out their DPs. However, the former India captain was criticised by many for not taking a proper stand in the matter and not speaking against the West Bengal government, which has been widely criticised for the handling of the gruesome crime.
Ganguly, who is a father to a daughter himself, has now decided to hit the streets in Kolkata in what will be a significant step. Protests have been taking place across Kolkata ever since the incident came to light with doctors and normal public standing in solidarity. The case is currently being investigated by the CBI.
Ganguly criticised for ‘stray incident’ remark on Kolkata rape-murder case
Earlier, Ganguly was slammed by many on social media for his ‘stray incident’ remarks on the Kolkata rape and murder case. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, the former India captain had said such incidents happen everywhere in the world and that it won’t be appropriate to judge based on one incident.
“It’s very unfortunate. There should be strict action against it. It’s terrible. I don’t think it is appropriate to judge safety issues based on a stray incident. It is just one of the incidents. Such accidents happen in all parts of the world but this has to be strictly dealt with,” Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata.
His comments led to widespread criticism following which Ganguly decided to change his DP to express solidarity. He also later clarified that his comments were taken out of context and that he wants severe punishment for the prepertors.
