New Delhi: Dr Michael Mosley, UK-based author and diet expert, recently took to social media to debunk a popular weight loss myth around starvation and shared the benefits of fasting instead. He posted a videon on Facebook and debunked the many myths around ‘starvation mode’ diet. He explained in the same that most people follow the idea of rapid weight loss wherein the body goes crazy – and after the same, one ends up eating too much junk food which eventually causes weight gain.
“Now this is a myth. It’s based on a study that was performed shortly after the Second World War and is actually about low protein, rather than low calories and such. Nonetheless, it’s hung around in the public consciousness ever since. Study after study has shown the rate in which you lose weight has no impact on whether you regain it,” Dr Mosley added in the video.
How does starvation support weight loss?
The expert also captioned the video and explained how studies show that some forms of fasting can help boost metabolism and break down fat cells consequently. This is contrary to the popular belief that starving takes a negative toll on metabolism and wreaks the internal system and raising blood sugar overtime, contributing to weight gain. The expert endorsed the Fast 800 plan earlier, a 12-week regimen which is created to assist dieters to lose weight and also maintain it. This includes exercise tips, meal plans and personal support.
What are the negative effects of starvation?
While Dr Mosley says that starvation, if done current, reports suggest that some people can successfully starve for days and weeks. However, in the process, the body’s systems can weaken and also deteriorate. Some of the worst side effects of starvation are:

Low heart rate
Cognitive changes
Dehydration
Weakness
Abdominal pain
Changes in thyroid function

Doctors say that in a long run, it can result in stunted growth, depression and even PTSD. It may also lead to malnutrition.
