New Delhi: Australian batter Steve Smith has announced his retirement from ODI cricket after the semifinal defeat against India in the 2025 Champions Trophy semifinal. He scored 73 runs off 96 balls with the help of four boundaries and one maximum in his last ODI appearance in Dubai.

He has scored 5800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96 in 170 ODIs, including 12 hundreds and 35 half-centuries. Smith finished his career as the 12th highest run-getter for Australia in the 50-over format. The star Australian batter registered his highest score of 164 runs against New Zealand in 2016. He made his debut as a leg-spinning allrounder and picked up 28 wickets.

In 2015 World Cup, Smith scored five consecutive fifty-plus scores including 105 runs in the semi-final victory over India and an unbeaten 56 runs in the final against New Zealand at the MCG including hitting the winning runs.

The 35-year-old informed his teammates about his decision immediately after the defeat against India, meaning he will not be part of Australia’s squad for the 2027 World Cup. He was the stand-in captain for the Champions Trophy in Pat Cummins’ absence.

He is currently not part of Australia’s T20I set up after being dropped from the 2024 T20 World Cup squad but has stated that he would like to play for Australia at the 2028 Olympic games in T20 cricket and remains available for selection if called upon.

‘Test cricket remains a priority’: Steve Smith

Smith in a statement to Cricket Australia said that it has been a great ride and he has loved every minute of it. “There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey” Smith said.

He further added that Test cricket remains a priority and he is really looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. Smith also said that he feels he still has a lot to contribute on that stage.
