Women who smoke are more likely to develop ovulation abnormalities, irregular menstrual periods, and menopause at a younger age. In males, smoking can have a direct impact on sperm health by lowering sperm count, motility, and morphology (form). Smoking is also associated with increased levels of DNA fragmentation in sperm, which is a major cause of recurrent pregnancy loss and failed fertility treatments. Furthermore, smoking can reduce testosterone levels, which affects libido and general reproductive health.
Cigarettes contain hazardous substances like nicotine, cadmium, and lead, which are poisonous to reproductive organs. These pollutants may impair hormonal balance, which is important for both male and female fertility. They can also lead to the accumulation of free radicals in the body, which can damage egg and sperm cells.
How does quitting smoking help?
