Surat: A fake train ticket scam was uncovered by vigilance department officials as well as police officials in the diamond city of Surat in Gujarat after raids were carried out at the premises of Ekta Travels. The officials uncovered a whopping Rs 4.5 crore scam involving the issuance of confirmed tickets on fake IDs. This scam uncovered how the travel agency allegedly used unscrupulous means to bypass IRCTC’s security measures and issue confirmed tickets on bogus IDs.
What is the Surat fake train ticket scam about
The details of 973 fake IDs that were allegedly used by the travel agency to issue confirmed train tickets were received by vigilance department and police officials. Ekta Travels promoters Rajesh Mittal and his family allegedly carried out 10 crore transactions and booked 2.88 crore e-tickets using the Ghadar software. The Police seized 5 laptops during the raid.
The alleged scam assumes importance since the agency allegedly deprived lakhs of people of an opportunity to purchase railway tickets online while issuing tickets to customers on fake IDs. The fake ticket scam may have affected train ticket buyers at physical counters as well. An in-depth probe into the alleged scam was conducted by the police in Surat.
How did the accused carry out the scam
The Eastern Railway System vigilance team’s Mumbai division raided a flat in Satellite Medh Samaran Apartments following a tip. The accused Mittal allegedly hacked IRCTC systems using illegally obtained Gadar and Nexus software from IRCTC using multiple fake IDs and passwords.
He hacked the tickets using accomplices and sold them to customers in exchange for a higher commission. To be sure, Mittal was a licensed IRCTC ticketing agent. The tatkal ticket booking scam was exposed by Vigilance officer Sanjay Kumar, the Divya Bhaskar reported.
