Suryakumar Yadav eyes for a Test comeback, prepares for red-ball domestic tournaments

New Delhi: Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav is aiming for a comeback in Test cricket after being kept away from the format for more than a year. The Mumbai-born player made his Test debut against Australia in the series opener in Nagpur last year.

Failure to score runs upon his calibre led to his omission from the team and he hasn’t been seen in the whites again at the international stage. In a report by the Indian Express, Suryakumar has made himself available to play for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu invitational cricket tournament in the last minute.

The move comes as a preparation for the domestic season, which will start with the Duleep Trophy from September 5.

“I want to play for India in all three formats. Playing in Buchi Babu will give me good practice for the red-ball tournaments this season,” Suryakumar was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Suryakumar has scored 5628 runs in 82 first-class matches at an average of 43.62 with 29 fifties and 14 centuries next to his name. His last action in red-ball cricket was during the final of the Duleep Trophy 2023 in Bengaluru, where he represented West Zone.

Suryakumar starts international captaincy on a good note

Suryakumar Yadav took India’s T20 Internationals reigns from Rohit Sharma with the latter announcing retirement from the shortest format at the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in June. The first assignment for the 33-year-old was the three-match T20I series in the recent tour of Sri Lanka.

India swept the series 3-0 to mark the beginning of a new dawn under Suryakumar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, though the team lost its first ODI series against Asian rivals for the first time in 27 years. Suryakumar, who scored 92 runs in the T20Is, wasn’t included in the ODI squad. He hasn’t played the 50-over format since India’s defeat to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final in November.
