New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav’s journey to the Indian men’s cricket team has been a roller-coaster ride. The stylish Indian batter had to put the hard yards in the domestic circuit for a decade before getting the nod into the national team.
In a span of three years, the Mumbai-born player has not just cemented his place in the shortest format of the game but also proved his mettle with the leadership role. He was named the successor of Rohit Sharma as captain of the T20 Internationals following the latter’s decision to announce retirement after the T20 World Cup triumph in June 2024.
Suryakumar Yadav is one of the Indian team players who has inked numerous tattoos on different parts of his body. During an interview with JioCinema in IPL 2023, Suryakumar explained the significance and reasons behind his tattoos.
The star Indian batter got his first tattoo inked with the names of his father Ashok Kumar Yadav and mother Swapna Yadav. This permitted the Indian cricketer to make more tattoos in future. Therefore, his body is laced with tattoos today, reminiscing a lot of memories.
There is one evil eye tattoo on his hand, which was made on the recommendation of his wife Devisha Shetty. Devisha believed Suryakumar gets cast to an evil eye. Revealing his favourite tattoo on the body, Suryakumar mentioned about the portrait of his father and mother on one of his shoulder, which happens to be older for more than five years.
A tattoo of a lion on his hand is a representation of calm but stronger Suryakumar as he likes to call it as ‘calm lion’. Another tattoo of an arrow on the upper arm is to signify that life pulls one back to put them forward. A tattoo on the foot indicates ‘one step at a time’.
The other upper arm of the player has a Maori tribe tattoo, which he got inked on the New Zealand tour. “When I was on tour to NZ, I got aware of this design of the Maori tribe. I met a person who told me that this design brings one luck and love and keeps you calm,” said Suryakumar.
He also planned to make one tattoo of all three India cap numbers. Following India’s T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados, Suryakumar contemplated to get the date and trophy tattooed. Interestingly, June 29 (2024) happens to be the birthdate of Suryakumar’s sister.
