Swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister: What is Oath of Office and Oath of Secrecy | Explained

New Delhi: Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi will take the Oath of Office and Secrecy on Sunday, June 9, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Oath of Office vs Oath of Secrecy

The Prime Minister of India and other ministers, including the state and union ministers, must take Oath of Office and Oath of Secrecy. The Third Schedule of the Indian Constitution “stipulates that designates of all constitutional posts in the country take an Oath of Office. All ministers about to assume office must take an Oath of Office and Secrecy as per Article 75(4) of the Constitution in the Third Schedule.” As the country’s highest authority, the President of India administers the oath to the Prime Minister and Ministers.

Oath of Office

In the Oath of Office, ministers solemnly pledge their allegiance to the Constitution of India, promising to work for the country’s welfare and fulfil their duties with utmost honesty and integrity. This oath underscores the high level of responsibility that comes with their positions, instilling a sense of trust and accountability in the citizens.

Oath of Secrecy

Meanwhile, an Oath of Secrecy requires the minister-designate to safeguard the secrets and official secrets in their office.

The Oath of Office form

“I, (name), do swear in the name of God/solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India, that I will faithfully and conscientiously discharge my duties as a Minister for the Union and that I will do right to all manner of people in accordance with the Constitution and the law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.”

The Oath of Secrecy form

“I, (name), do swear in the name of God/solemnly affirm that I will not directly or indirectly communicate or reveal to any person or persons any matter which shall be brought under my consideration or shall become known to me as a Minister for the Union except as may be required for the due discharge of my duties as such Minister.”

The Prime Minister, while taking the oath, also swears he will not directly or indirectly communicate or reveal any information to any person on any matter that is bought under his consideration, or it is known to him as a Union Minister except as may be required for the due discharge of his duties as such minister. The Prime Minister is authorised to share any information of the national interest with his Cabinet colleagues, President and National Security Adviser, etc. only.
