New Delhi: French tennis star Quentin Halys made a strong case for himself as he won the EGF Swiss Open quarterfinal against Brazil’s Gustavo Heide in Gstaad on Friday. Taking the Brazilian down in straight sets, Halys impressed the crowd with his skillset and notably left them stunned with an outrageous “grounded” shot that saw him win the point as well. The shot was the talking point of the whole game and brought Halys under the spotlight.
The instance also weighed in on the fact that why the post-Wimbledon clay competition is worth watching. Fans all over the globe are hailing it as the shot of the year while some are billing it as one of the best of the year. Halys was knocked down and didn’t even bother to get up again, not just to return the shot seemingly effortlessly, but also to win the point.
How did it occur?
Taking on the Brazilian, the 27-year-old Frenchman was up an early break on Heide as he got wrong-footed on the game point and tumbled to the ground. Despite the shot looking out of reach, Halys decided to take it on being grounded, striking a heavy forehand solely with the strength of his upper body. Although Heide came near to the reply, he missed the near-winner and it brought Halys a huge round of applause.

Halys rode on the momentum from an amazing point through the first set and ultimately routed Heide in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 to qualify for only his second ATP semifinal after 2023 Estoril. He is projected to move into the top 150 after this result as Halys will next face either No. 4 seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry or No. 5 seed Jan-Lennard Struff in a bid to reach the biggest final of his career.
