Kolkata: India skipper Rohit Sharma has struck 200 sixes in T20Is, completing the landmark in their T20 World Cup game against Australia on Monday.
At the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, India lost Virat Kohli for a duck. Rohit hit four sixes and a four off Mitchell Starc to become the first batter in the world to reach the milestone.
He was particularly severe on Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, clubbing four sixes and a four off Starc in India’s third over.
His counter punching put Australia on the backfoot as the opener became the second-highest six-hitter in the history of T20 World Cup, getting past David Warner (40) and Jos Buttler (43).
Former New Zealand opener Martin Guptill is second behind Rohit with 173 sixes in T20Is while Suryakumar Yadav (129) and Virat Kohli (121) are the only Indin batters to have managed over 100 sixes in T20Is.
600 plus sixes in internationals
Earlier in the tournament, Rohit completed the mark of 600 sixes in international cricket. The 37-year-old reached the feat during his 52-run knock against Ireland in New York, becoming the first batter to manage 600 sixes across the three formats of cricket.
Former West Indies opener Gayle is the only other cricketer to have bludgeoned more than 500 maximums (553).
Since making his international debut in 2007, right-handed Rohit been a six-hitting machine with 323 shots over the fence in ODIs, to be the third-most prolific six-hitter after Shahid Afridi (351) and Gayle (331), apart from 200 sixes in T20Is.
He has 84 sixes in Test cricket, second Indian batter only to Virender Sehwag (91).
