New Delhi: Virat Kohli’s form slump continued in India’s T20 World Cup semi-final against England on Thursday.
The former India skipper was clean bowled by Reece Topley for nine from as many deliveries after England won the toss and elected to field in the rain-affected match.
Showers delayed the toss and start of play at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. When the skies cleared up, Kohli and India skipper went on to bat.
Kohli didn’t look comfortable from the very beginning and was beaten Topley and Jofra Archer, England’s two new-ball bowlers, in the first two overs.
The right hander tried to break the shackles by charging down the track. When he dispatched Topley’s fuller length delivery for a six over mid-wicket it seemed he would hit upon some much-needed rhythm.
But in the very next ball his struggle to time the ball was evident when he top-edged a low full toss back towards long off and picked up a couple.
In the fourth ball of the third over he once again danced down the track and missed the good-length ball in an attempt to heave it towards mid-wicket as the ball flicked the top of the leg stump.
He wa beaten by movement as the shaped in towards him slightly as he walked back dejected, having socred only 75 runs in seven innings of the tournament, including two ducks.
Kohli’s ploy of dashing towards the bowler during powerplays haven’t helped him in scoring quickly. His willingness to take risks haven’t paid off and put pressure on India in the first six overs in which Rohit has scored bulk of the runs.
In three previous T20 World Cup semi-finals appearances, kohli had scored half centuries but on Thursday he fell well short.
