Mumbai: Stalwarts and industrialists like Narayana Murthy may suggest normalising 70 hours a week according to their personal experiences, however, people often forget everybody’s body mechanism and functioning isn’t the same. Not all may prefer and can work for such long hours with inadequate compensation and most importantly, causing damaging effects to health. Long working hours hamper relationships, leaving one hollow and burnt out at the end. Also, not all would like to prioritise work above everything in life.
We often get confused with people saying, “You need to come out of your comfort zone to achieve something in life.” This may be true, but definitely, one need not push oneself to compromise their physical and mental health. So, don’t be confused, always prioritise your health- 8 hours of sleep and proper meal times above everything.
Money can be earned but once you neglect health and invite a lifestyle disease due to a sedentary job or fatigue, that may stay with you forever. So, the most perfect inspiration and recent example that we have is of our very own Manoj from 12th Fail, actor Vikrant Massey.
Taking a break from work is crucial
Vikrant Massey left fans and admirers stunned on Monday, December 2 with the announcement of his retirement. He wrote, “The last few years and beyond have been phenomenal. I thank each and every one of you for your indelible support. But as I move forward, I realise it’s time to recalibrate and go back home. As a Husband, Father and a Son. And also as an Actor.”
He continued, “So coming 2025, we will meet each other for one last time. Until time deems right. The last 2 movies and many years of memories. Thank you again. For everything and everything in between.” He added “forever indebted” at the end of the note.
However, when many of his fans, including me were confused whether the sane actor had taken a retirement from acting or a prolonged break.
He cleared the air and revealed on December 3 that he is taking a prolonged break from work. In a conversation with News18 Showsha, Vikrant said, “I’m not retiring. Just burned out. Need a long break. Miss home. Health is also acting up. People misread it [the social media post].”
He added, “Acting is all I can do. And it has given me everything I have. My physical and mental health has taken a hit. I just want to take some time off, want to better my craft. I feel a sense of monotony at the moment. My post has been misinterpreted. That I am quitting or retiring from acting. I want to take some time off to focus on my family and health. I will be back when the time feels right.”
So, when you feel burnt out, going to the office seems like a task and you have to push yourself hard to reach the workplace; sit quietly and think. It is the sign from your body saying that it needs a break from the hectic work schedule, monotonous routine and the amount of stress you are putting on your body by glueing your eyes for hours on the screen in that same posture; in case of desk work sacrificing or compromising your meals or working under pressure for meeting deadlines.
Even if it is not a desk job and you may be doing anything else, if you feel work stress is affecting your sleep, meal timings, relationships and mental health; time to pause.
Experts including doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists have often emphasised the need for a work-life balance which the workaholic species may dismiss, but do what suits best for your physical and mental well-being; a small break causes no harm.
Take a break for some time- maybe a few months till you recharge yourself but try not to compromise or succumb to a toxic workplace culture on returning that may ruin your wellbeing in the future. Utilise this break to the fullest- to travel, self-care and spend time with family- one of the most important things that we may forget due to the hustle and bustle of life, improve your skills and do exactly what you love to do- hobbies and passion.
After all, Vikrant Massey’s 12th Fail taught us, “Restart, Restart, Restart.”
