Tale of two Manchester sides: Manchester United women soar while men struggle

New Delhi: Manchester United fans have been devoid of any real excitement for most parts of the season as the Red Devils continue to struggle in the Premier League. The season began in horrible fashion for them and manager Erik Ten Hag was let go midway through the season and was replaced by the highly rated Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach.

Things were expected to take a turn for the better under the Portuguese but it hasn’t proved to be the case for the them till now. Conversely, it’s the Manchester United women that are doing what was expected of the men’s team and they’re pushing for the Women’s Super League title while the men sit 15th in the Premier League. The women’s team is thriving under Marc Skinner and are looking to challenge Chelsea for the WSL title as they head towards the business end of the season.

Glory, Glory Man United (Women)

Manchester United have long been associated with success and glory since their existence but the women’s side haven’t had much to boost about in their short history. Formed in 2018, the Manchester United women only have the FA Women’s Championship of 2018/19 and the Women’s FA Cup they won last season to show for silverware. In comparison, the men’s team is the most successful English club of all time with 20 league titles, 13 FA Cups, six league cups and three UEFA Champions Leagues.

This season however, it seems as if both sides have swapped their fortunes. While the women’s squad haven’t won a WSL title till now, they have always been competing for Europe and even finished as runners-up during the 2022/23 season. They’re currently on the tails for league leaders Chelsea and with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace recently, they maintained their charge for their first ever league title.

They currently sit second in the league, seven points behind Chelsea while the men’s squad are currently closer to relegation than they are to the European spots. Ruben Amorim’s injury-hit United men’s side are struggling in 15th place, with just 29 points from 25 games. Their recent slump has seen them drop below the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace, adding to the growing frustrations among supporters.

Meanwhile, the women’s team is flying high, with 33 points from 14 games. Marc Skinner’s side has lost just once all season and is firmly in the title race, ahead of rivals like Arsenal and Manchester City. They have conceded the least number of goals in the league, boasting the best defense in the country and have produced dominant wins all season, such as a 4-2 win over Manchester City, a 4-0 thrashing of Liverpool and also completed a double over Tottenham in the season.

How can both sides finish their seasons?

While the men’s team faces questions about injuries, tactics, and squad depth, the women’s side has shown consistency, resilience, and winning mentality, something United supporters desperately crave from the club as a whole. With the men’s season heading towards an uncertain finish and their European hopes hanging by a thread, perhaps it’s time for the spotlight to shift toward the women’s team, who are giving United fans a reason to smile.

The men’s team are currently still in the hunt for two pieces of silverware this season with Ruben Amorim’s side still competing in the UEFA Europa League and the FA Cup. Recent injury issues could see them falter in the league but they should aim to make a deep run into both cup competitions. They face Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round and should advance to the quarterfinals, hoping to retain the trophy.

The women’s team on the other hand, while still competing for the WSL title, sit seven points behind Chelsea with only eight games remaining. They’d need to continue their spectacular form and also hope the Blues lose some of theirs, which seems unlikely considering they’re unbeaten till now. The women’s side are also still involved in the FA Cup and have a favourable quarter-final draw at home against Sunderland, which they should win to advance to the semis. If things go well for both teams, United could end the season as double FA Cup winners.

Manchester United women have been outperforming their male counterparts and continued their push for a league title with another commanding win over Crystal Palace in their recent WSL fixture.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
