New Delhi: Female kabaddi student-athletes from various Tamil Nadu universities were attacked during an Inter-university match in Bathinda, Punjab. As per the India Today report, The fight broke out after the players were unhappy with an unfair decision from the match referee.
The players from Mother Teresa University, Periyar University, Alagappa University and Bharathiar University were in Punjab to participate in the North Zone Inter University & All India Inter University Kabaddi (Women) Championship 2024-25. The athletes were allegedly attacked during the match by members of the opposition team. It was reportedly due to a ‘foul’ attack called against Mother Teresa University by the referee during a match against Darbhanga University.
As the team appealed for the foul, an argument broke out between the referee and players from the Mother Teresa team and he attacked a member of the team which led to a physical altercation as both teams started attacking each other. The videos of the incident were widely circulated on social media. The spectators who are supporting Darbhanga University also joined the fight. The altercation footage also showed plastic chairs being thrown around and female players from Tamil Nadu varsity teams being attacked.

‘Everything is under control’: Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said that he has spoken to the physical education director and everything is under control. He further added that the players will return to Delhi and will stay at Tamil Nadu house in Delhi.
“There was a small incident today morning. I have spoken to the Physical Education Director, Mr Kalaiarasi. Now everything is under control. No major injuries or anything. First aid was given to the students. They will return to Delhi and they will be made to stay at Delhi House (Tamil Nadu House in Delhi) tonight. They are leaving from Delhi in the night the day after tomorrow. They will be reaching Chennai very shortly,” he said.
