Chennai: A day after Karnataka reported cancer causing chemicals mixed in Pani Puri, food safety officials have started raiding and collecting samples from shops in Chennai. The team raided over 80 shops The offcials observed that at most of them was the lack of hygiene. During the raid, the quality of pani puri, masala, chaat, and basic ingredients used in the food were analyzed and samples were collected.
“We have taken samples for testing at various places in Chennai today based on the fact that the Tamil Nadu government has also decided to test the pani puri after it was reported that it contains cancer-causing chemicals in Karnataka. It will take 3-4 days for the results to come out, and criminal action will be taken if there are any harmful substances. A Food Safety Department official conducts raids in crowded places where pani puris are being sold,” a senior food safety official said.
The food safety officials aims to complete inspecting 1500 shops in the city in the days to come. The officials will check if there is a high amount of ethylene oxide in chat masalas and presence of ‘green apple dye’ in the food they serve.
Public are requested not to consume pani puri with bare hands at take away places. Do not consume the water used in Panipuri if it is too colored.
In a recent survey conducted by the Karnataka Health Department, around 250 pani puri samples were collected from several eateries across the state. Of these, 40 samples tested positive for the presence of cancer-causing agents.
