New Delhi: World champion D Gukesh has now become the World No.3 in the FIDE rating after ending his match with China’s Wei Yi in the Round 11 of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament on Friday. In the other match, R Praggnanandhaa defeated United States’ Fabiano Caruana.
After the completion of the 11 rounds at the Tata Steel Chess in Wijk Aan Zee (The Netherlands), Gukesh has seen a rise of 16 rating points. In the live ratings of FIDE, Gukesh has accumulated 2793.2 ratings, which is still short of his career-best 2794 ratings achieved in October 2024.
With Arjun Erigaisi, who was India’s top-ranked player before the event, not having a great tournament in the Netherlands, going down in the ratings by 33 points to descend to the sixth spot. This means Gukesh is also the new India No.1.
Gukesh played with the white side of an Italian game against the Chinese player. In the opening, the Tamil Nadu player pushed the central pawn. Gukesh was up by a pawn during the endgame, but the position was soon levelled and the game ended in a draw.
Gukesh has now jumped to eight points out of the total 11 points in what has been his first major tournament after emerging as the youngest World champion in December last year.
While using the black pieces, Praggnanandhaa defeated Caruana, who was positioned as World No.2 before the tournament, to move to 7.5 points. The 19-year-old went for the attack to capture the white queen following the two players castling on either side of the board. The intent shown by Caruana didn’t show any desired results and ended up making a blunder on the 32nd move to concede win against his opponent five moves later.
