New Delhi: American tennis player Taylor Fritz has revealed that he is donating the prize money he pocketed after his first-round victory at the Australian Open – approximately $82,000 – to LA wildfire relief funds to help people affected by the rampaging wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area.
“I mean, I feel like it’s really the least I can do,” said the former US Open finalist. Fritz was born in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and still is based in the state.
Fritz revealed that he spends a lot of time in LA and has also lived in the city for quite a while adding that he has friends in the area who have been impacted by the wildfires. He also said that some of his family members had to evacuate and also revealed that the house that his brothers grew up in burnt down.

Fritz was speaking after reaching the third round at Melbourne Park courtesy of a 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 victory over qualifier Cristian Garín of Chile. The LA wildfire is on track to become the USA’s costliest fire disaster. At least 25 people have been declared dead and thousands of homes destroyed.
Several tennis stars with connections to the Los Angeles area are playing in Melbourne Park in the year’s first Grand Slam tournament.
Earlier this week, Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, said that she sent someone to save her 1 1/2-year-old daughter’s birth certificate from their California home as a precaution. Tristan Boyer, a 23-year-old tennis star from California, who was knocked out of the tournament on Thursday, revealed that his father had to evacuate their house in Altadena.
There is a long list of players at the Australian Open, including, Osaka, Iga Swiatek Coco Gauff and Donna Vekic, who have spoken on the LA tragedy.
