Bhadrachalam MLA Tellam Venkat Rao, a surgeon performed emergency caesarean sections on two pregnant women at Bhadrachalam government hospital on Tuesday amid floods in the area.
Heavy rain and flooding ground the area to halt, throwing normal life out of gear. Officials moved the women to Bhadrachalam hospital, pre-empting challenges posed by floods. However, four of five surgeons at the hospital were recently transferred and one was on court duty, when two women developed abdominal pains.
Hospital authorities decided that transporting women to other hospitals would be impossible and called up MLA Tellam Venkat Rao, who is known for his surgical expertise.
The MLA who was in his constituency to oversee flood relief efforts, immediately took charge at the hospital and performed C-Sections on both women. B Swapna, P Pushpaleela delivered a boy and a girl respectively in their second pregnancies.
Venkat Rao is a trained surgeon and served at the same hospital previously. He said that he will continue to serve the area’s residents and expressed gratitude to anaesthesiologist Dr Mallesh, Gynaecologist Dr Srinidhi, nursing staff Kalyani, Vijaylakshmi, Meena, Sita, Bhavani, whose efforts ensured two successful surgeries.
The water level of Godavari in Bhadrachalam has come down to 47 feet, as per reports.
