New Delhi: Testicular cancer is comparatively less common than other cancer cases that seriously affect men. In India, this cancer is considerably low and rare, accounting for only 1 per cent that is 1 man per 1 lakh population. The major cause behind testicular cancer is still unknown but there are a few factors leading to it.
Dr Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala Consultant Uro-oncologist Asian Institute of Uro-Oncology and Robotic Surgery told News9, “Most of the testicular cancers arise from germ cells (Precursors of spermatozoa). In fact, these are the most common cancers affecting young adults. These cancers are usually curable if detected before it’s too late.”
Hence watch out if you have the following 3 risks and 3 signs.
Risk factors:
1. Undescended testis: The development of testis occurs inside the abdomen of the fetus, and later descends into the scrotum by birth. If the descent is hampered, then it is called Undescended testis, which increases the risk of germ cells turning into cancer due to incompatible location.
2. Family history of testis cancer in father or sibling, sometimes having cancer in one testicle increases the likelihood of developing cancer in the other testicle.
3. Infertility also increases the risk of developing cancer in the testis
Clinical features:
1. Testicular enlargement or lump in the testis raises the red flag. Sometimes it’s associated with dull ache or dragging pain. Rarely lax hydrocele (fluid accumulation in the scrotum around the testis) can co-exist.
2. Lump in the abdomen or neck swelling: it’s a sign of lymphatic spread inside the tummy and in late stages, it can spread to neck nodes, especially at the left side above the collar bone.
3. Loss of weight and loss of hunger can happen in the late stages.
So, see your urologist, and get an ultrasound scan of the scrotum to rule out testicular tumors. Once detected. Treatment starts with surgical removal of cancer-affected testis via groin incision and microscopic examination to confirm the cancer type (Seminoma vs Nonseminoma). Testis-sparing surgery is considered in selective cases. Then chemotherapy for nodal spread with or without surgical removal of abdominal nodes. Let me reassure most of the cases can be curable with proper methodical treatment.
