It was a mix year for the Mumbai-born player. He entered the year by drawing the Test series in Cape Town. He returned to the T20 International format after a year of hiatus and notched up his fifth century in the format against Afghanistan in Bengaluru.

He was no longer the captain of IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, where he delivered five titles, and was replaced by Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya. There were multiple controversial theories running across the media streams after the captaincy change by the franchise. Regardless of that, Rohit was named as the captain of India’s T20I team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

India went on to win their second T20 World Cup after a span of 17 years under Rohit’s leadership by winning  nine matches on the bounce as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the final by seven runs in Barbados.

Rohit announced his time from T20 Internationals after the T20 World Cup triumph after playing 159 matches between 2007 and 2024.

Lows of Rohit Sharma as captain in 2024

The highs cannot cover the lows for any individual and for Rohit also there were come moments under his captaincy where the team suffered such moments. After India lost the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in August this year, it was their first defeat against the Asian rivals in an ODI series in 27 years.

India lost their home dominance after getting whitewashed by New Zealand 3-0 on home soil. This was their first defeat in a Test series at home in 12 years, ending their 18-run winning streak in home conditions.

The Indian team won’t win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series after trailing 2-1 with the defeat in the fourth Test in Melbourne. Rohit has suffered six Test defeats in the calendar year as the captain, only behind Virat Kohli’s seven in 2018 as India captain.
