‘The beast has arrived’: Netizens hail Neeraj Chopra for outstanding start at Paris Olympics 2024

New Delhi: India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra looked rampant while starting off his campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 as it was all determination and grit on his mind that he threw the javelin to 89.34 metres and qualified for the final of the event right away. This tells how eager and determined he is to defend his Olympic gold as no other qualified thrower could meet Neeraj in the two-group list.

A total of 12 athletes qualified for the final of men’s javelin throw from both the groups (A & B). Neeraj topped the Group B charts with his arch-rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan (86.59 metres) placed fourth in the list. Nadeem was third in the overall list, second being Anderson Peters with a throw of 88.63 meters. But… no one could come close to Neeraj’s first and final attempt of 89.34 metres.

He has been long rooting to touch the 90-metre mark for which he has been up to rigorous and gruelling training. It is well known how dedicatedly he trains for every upcoming event and his Paris Olympics 2024 preparation has been nothing short of exemplary. Although a thrower gets three attempts each to best their previous throws if need be, but for Neeraj, one throw was all it took.

He will now feature in the final of the event scheduled to take place on August 8 at 11:55 pm IST where the whole nation will be watching him excel on the javelin field and roar at the top of his lungs by breaching the 90-metre mark and register his career-best effort. His monstrous 89.34-metre effort on Tuesday is his qualification best and his second-best attempt overall. He was close to touching 90 at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022 as he registered 89.94 metres.

His qualification effort at the Paris Olympics 2024 took him to centrestage of appreciation on the internet.

It is sad that in a country with a population of 1.4 billion, he is the only athlete who gave us hope to bring home a gold medal for India. Best of luck, champ Neeraj Chopra. #NeerajChopra pic.twitter.com/CIwOQNuRCo
