‘Thoda aage dalna’: How Pant’s advice helped Ashwin break Kumble’s record – WATCH

New Delhi: R Ashwin continued his fine form with the ball on Day 1 of the 2nd Test between India and Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur as he broke Anil Kumble’s record for most wickets by an Indian bowler in Asia. Ashwin achieved the elusive milestone after dismissing Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto to open his account during the visitors’ first innings.

Ashwin now has 420 wickets to his name in Asia as he went past Kumble, who finished his career with 419 wickets in the continent. Ashwin is now only behind the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, who is the leading wicket-taker of all time in Asia with 612 wickets under his belt. Kumble remains the leading wicket-taker for India in Test cricket with 619 scalps under his belt.

Ashwin managed to break Kumble’s record on Friday with some help from his teammate Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. The Indian wicket-keeper, who has been at his witty best on the stump-mic, came up with some crucial advice for Ashwin to help him outfox Shanto, who had settled down well in the middle.

Pant was caught on the stump mic, asking Ashwin to bowl slightly fuller to the Bangladesh skipper and the move ended up paying off. “Ash bhai halka sa thoda aagae daalna padega (Ash brother you will have to bowl slightly fuller),” Pant was caught saying by the stump mic. Ashwin trapped Shanto lbw on the next ball to break the 51-run partnership between him and Mominul Haque.

Bangladesh end rain-marred Day 1 on 107/3

Bangladesh were 107/3 at stumps on Day 1 after rain played spoilsport at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. India managed to complete only 35 overs in the visitors 1st innings and picked up three wickets. Akash Deep drew the first blood for the hosts by dismissing opener Zakir Hasan on a duck before removing his opening partner Shadman Islam cheaply on 24.

Shanto then combined with Mominul to share a gritty stand for the third wicket. However, the partnership was broken by Ashwin in the 29th over. The start of the play has been delayed on Day 2 in Kanpur due to rain and wet outfield.

Rishabh Pant’s advice to R Ashiwn paid off as it helped the senior off-spinner dismiss Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto on Day 1 of the 2nd Test in Kanpur and break Anil Kumble’s all time record.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
