‘Hiring Langurs for monkeys’: Here’s how UPCA aims to save broadcasters in 2nd Test

New Delhi: In order to avoid snatching of food by monkeys, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has taken a very different approach during the ongoing Test match between India and Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

To address the issue, the UPCA has hired langurs (long-tailed leaf monkeys), along with their handlers to protect the food and snacks of camerapersons working in the second Test. Monkeys in Kanpur have troubled the fans in the past and this is not the first time that Langurs service has been hired at the venue.

In a chat with Indian Express, venue director Sanjay Kapoor said that the monkeys attack the broadcast camera operators as they are easy targets for them. The camerapersons in Kanpur are positioned in elevated stands for an optimal view and monkeys often snatch their drinks and snacks during the match.

The report further stated that the raised stand beyond the boundary line used by the broadcasting crew to place the camera at the stadium is covered with black cloth to reduce the chances of monkeys accessing the area.

“To avoid the terror of monkeys, we have langurs to take care of them” Kapoor said to the Indian Express.

Start of play delayed on Day 2

Only 35 overs of play was possible on Day 1 of the second Test and the rain is playing spoilsport as the first session on Day 2 was washed out due to heavy rain. India won the toss and opted to bowl first in the overcast conditions.

The Bangladeshi batters struggled to score runs against Indian fast bowlers. Akash Deep provided the first breakthrough to the Men in Blue and removed Zakir Hasan on a duck. He picked up his second wicket and dismissed Shadman Islam on 24 runs.

Shanto and Mominul stitched a 51-run partnership for the third wicket. Ashwin removed Shanto after lunch on 31 runs and a few minutes later, umpires stopped the play due to the bad light and the play was called for the day due to heavy rain.
