Three killed as heavy rains wreak havoc in Kerala, IMD predicts more downpour in coming days

Thiruvananthapuram: Three people were killed in different incidents after heavy rains continued to wreak havoc in Kerala on Tuesday as the incessant downpour raised the water level of five dams including the Malankara, Peringalkuthu dams which promoted the government to open the shutters.

All three deaths were reported from Palakkad where a mother and son died after a wall of their house collapsed while they were sleeping on Monday night. The deceased were identified as Sulochana (53), and Ranjith (33), police said, adding they were found dead by their neighbours on Tuesday morning. One more person was killed in a rain-related incident in the district.

Officials reported incidents of trees being uprooted and minor landslides in several areas across the central and northern districts. The shutters of the Malankara and Kallarkutty dams were raised to release excess water. Authorities urged residents living along the shores of the Periyar, Muthirappuzha, Thodupuzha, and Muvattupuzha rivers to remain vigilant.

In Ernakulam, the Periyar River was flowing in spate following heavy rains that damaged several houses. The popular Shiva temple in Aluva was also submerged on Tuesday. In Idukki,  popular tourist places witnessed heavy downpours and gusty winds which led to traffic snarls.

Busy routes connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu were also blocked due to landslides reported in multiple districts. In Kottayam, the Kummanam Ilankavu temple auditorium was damaged after the pillars fell, causing the structure to collapse. Extensive damage to agricultural land and properties was also reported throughout Kottayam district.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more showers in the coming days with an orange alert issued for Kerala, citing very heavy to heavy rainfall for the next five days.
