Time to not normalise fatigue: Study says feeling tired all day is a sign of cancer

New Delhi: It is one thing to feel fatigued at the end of the day after running errands and working all day long, but a whole different thing when one feels fatigued for no concrete reason and all day long. While health experts say that it is not a very certain cause of cancer. Yet, doctors warn that this is a common and concerning cause of cancer that appears when one wakes up and then it lasts all day long. Despite this, 65% of cancer patients dismiss it for nothing.

According to experts, it is normal to feel exhausted first thing in the morning. Despite a well-rested sleep, it is not wholly abnormal to want to sleep a little more before starting the day. This effect is further relevant during the cold months of the year when temperatures drop and lack of sunlight makes one feel twice as sluggish as usual. However, when it is crippling fatigue that does not go away despite rest, experts say that this could be a potential symptom of cancer. Several times, even cancer survivors feel fatigued after chemotherapy. This form of fatigue affects a patient physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What are the symptoms of cancer?

According to experts, cancer-related fatigue can be accompanied by the following symptoms:

Anxiety
Depression
Lack of energy
Need for rest despite any activity
Struggling to wake up in the morning
Muscle pain
Low sex drive
Difficulty in making decisions
Breathlessness after simple, non-strenuous tasks
Concentration difficulty
Negative emotions
Loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed

These symptoms can collectively take a toll on overall health and also adversely affect mental health.

Should you see a doctor?

Fatigue does not necessarily always mean cancer. This symptom is often triggered by poor diet, sleep, or a sedentary lifestyle. But if you have any of the following comorbidities along with it, it is advised to check with a doctor on priority:

Thyroid disorders
Anaemia
Kidney disease
Heart disease
Long Covid
Endometriosis
Diabetes

But doctors have also expressed concerns regarding radiation therapy, pain medicines, chemotherapy,y and antidepressants that also trigger fatigue.
