New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic by 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the Wimbledon men’s singles final and defended his title on Sunday, July 14 The Spaniard handed Djokovic his first straight-set defeat in a Wimbledon final since 2013 and was dominant throughout the match.
Alcaraz previously won the French Open and the BNP Paribas Open in 2024 and this was his third title of the year. He is only the sixth male player to win the French Open and Wimbledon singles trophy in the same year since 1968.
Alcaraz won the first set against the Serbian international in 14 minutes and 5 break points to take an all-important lead in the set. Alcaraz dominated the second set as well and put pressure on Djokovic.
Alcaraz played brilliantly and made full use of the court, Djokovic found it hard to counter his charge. But he was not ready to give up and started attacking in the third set. The 37-year-old saved four break points in the third game and survived eventually.
At 4-5, Alcaraz earned three Championship points but the Serbian international made a sensational comeback and took the set into a tie-break. Alcaraz took a 3-1 lead in a tie-breaker, but Djokovic kept pushing harder. Alcaraz showed his class and defended his title.
