Mumbai: Chhath Puja, is a prominent Hindu festival devoted to worshipping the Sun God (Surya) and Chhath Maiya. The four-day festival of Chhath Mahaparv is being celebrated from November 5 to November 8 this year, with each day marked by distinct rituals.
It begins with Nahay Khay, where devotees purify themselves by bathing in sacred water and preparing food. On the second day, Kharna involves a fast that lasts throughout the day and is broken after sunset with offerings of rice pudding and chapatis. The third day, Sandhya Arghya which will be celebrated on November 7, is dedicated to offering prayers to the setting sun, while the final day, Usha Arghya, focuses on worshipping the rising sun and seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and well-being. The festival concludes with Parana, the breaking of the fast.
Devotees gather near rivers or water bodies to perform the Arghya (water offering) to the Sun God, praying for their family’s health and prosperity.
Chhath Mahaparv fosters a strong sense of community, bringing people together to pray, sing devotional songs, and share their offerings. This deeply meaningful festival is a way of expressing gratitude to the Sun for sustaining life on Earth and is rich in cultural significance.
