New Delhi: India’s historic campaign at the Paris Paralympics 2024 concluded on Sunday, September 08 with the contingent recording the country’s best-ever medal haul in a single edition of the Games. India won an impressive 29 medals, including 7 gold to register their best-ever performance in Paralympics.
India beat a number of top nations, including the likes of South Korea, Belgium and Argentina among others to finish in the top 20 in the Paris Paralympics 2024 medals table. After an ordinary campaign for the country in the Paris Olympics 2024, the nation’s hopes were pinned on the para-athletes and they didn’t disappoint as India enjoyed a historic campaign in the French capital.
India sent a strong contingent of record 84 athletes to Paris with the aim of breaching the 25-medal mark. The para-athletes comfortably surpassed the previous best tally of 19 medals from the Tokyo Games before going past the 25-medal mark. With 29 medals, India also crossed the 50-medal mark in the history of the Paralympics.
Para-shooter Avani Lekhara won India’s first medal at the Paris Paralympics after clinching gold in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 shooting. She became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympics having won a gold medal in the same event in the last edition in Tokyo. Navdeep Singh won a historic first Paralympic gold in the men’s javelin throw F41 category to bag India’s 29th medal at the Games.
Tokyo 2020 vs Paris 2024: Comparing the number of medals
India won a total of 19 medals – 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze at the last edition of the Paralympics in 2020 to record their best-ever tally at the time. However, the story was completely different in Paris this year as the Indian contingent bagged 29 medals – 7 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze to rewrite history.
Before Tokyo 2020, India had won a combined total of only 12 medals in all previous editions of the Paralympics combined. However, the Indian para-athletes ensured that they put the nation among the elites at the Paralympics with a staggering 48 medals in the last two editions.
India performed better in Paris in all aspects as they won two more gold and silver medals from the last edition in Tokyo while the number of bronze medals doubled from six to 12, showcasing the country’s remarkable progress in para sports.
