New Delhi: Some of India’s top footballers were involved in a charity match organised for the people affected by Cyclone Remal.
The match was held on June 21 at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl with the Mizoram Football Association and the Mizo Professional Footballers Association jointly organising the event.
Mizo players from Indian Super League teams played against the states footballers from the I-League with the match ending in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
India international Lallianzuala Chhangte, the highest Indian scorer in the ISL last season scored for the ISL team after an early own goal by Sairuatkima.
The I-League team responded through goals from Chunga and Jeremy in either half.
A significant crowd turned out to witness the match, which included four players from the recent World Cup qualifiers and a total of nine India internationals.
Before the main event, a game featuring Mizo celebrities also took place.
In an unrelated development, the All India Football Federation has announced that unregistered players, coaches, or referees shoudln’t be allowed to play in ‘unapproved tournaments’.
The AIFF has also recommended its member associations to take action against those who participate in such tournaments as per their state constitutions and urged the states FAs to implement registration policies for tournaments.
