New Delhi: According to reports from both Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein of The Athletic, Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has agreed to join French Ligue 1 side Marseille. The deal, valued at €31.6 million, includes a clause entitling Manchester United to 50% of any future resale of the player. Although the agreement has been reached in principle, Greenwood must still undergo a medical and sign a five-year contract to finalise his transfer to Roberto De Zerbi’s team.

Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since his arrest in January 2022, followed by charges in October of that year for attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. However, in 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation and new evidence emerged, leading to the conclusion that there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. Greenwood has consistently denied all allegations against him.
🚨🎙️ Mayor of Marseille, Benoît Payan: “I will ask the president of Marseille not to sign Mason Greenwood.

Earlier reports highlighted that Greenwood’s potential move to Marseille faced significant opposition in the Provençal capital. Marseille’s mayor, Benoît Payan, had expressed strong reservations about the transfer, primarily due to the 22-year-old’s controversial past.
Greenwood spent the latter half of last season on loan at Spanish club Getafe, where he sought to rejuvenate his career. Despite the challenges and scepticism surrounding his transfer, this move to Marseille represents a crucial opportunity for Greenwood to re-establish himself in European football. The formal steps, including the medical and contract signing, are expected to be completed soon, paving the way for Greenwood’s next chapter in Ligue 1.
