In conversation with News9, Dr Soumya Shetty Fertility consultant Nova IVF Fertility Chembur said, “Trying to conceive (TTC) can be a joyous experience yet a challenging journey for many couples. Fertility refers to the ability to conceive a child naturally. It can be affected by various factors such as drinking alcohol, smoking, obesity, stress, medical conditions, hormones, environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Some couples may conceive easily, while some may face various hurdles.”
Timing plays a crucial role in increasing the possibility of getting pregnant. “These days couples believe in planning the pregnancy ahead of time while considering things like financial stability, private time for the couple to spend together, accommodation, educational costs, and health or family conditions. However, it is vital to understand that fertility tends to decline with increasing age. This way the chances of conceiving naturally significantly decrease, which can often be disheartening for various couples,” said Dr Shetty.
Trying to conceive tips
• Talk to your gynecologist: If you have too many questions or concerns in your mind associated with conceiving then scheduling an appointment with your gynecologist can be effective. They can thoroughly guide you and provide solutions and treatment plans by considering factors like medical conditions, overall health, and certain lifestyle factors that need to be changed for successful outcomes. The gynaecologist might advise some suggestions to improve your lifestyle, physical health, and even dietary changes.
• Keep track of your menstrual cycle: Tracking your menstrual cycle can be extremely helpful to identify when the right time is. It helps you understand when you are more likely to be fertile and actively try for pregnancy. Some women have irregular menstrual cycles due to factors like PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), hormonal imbalance, and uterine fibroids. If your periods are irregular then keeping track can provide insightful information to your doctor to help identify underlying issues that might create hindrance in your conceiving journey.
• Know your fertile window: In simple words fertile window means the particular time during the menstrual cycle when the chances of getting pregnant are the highest. Fertile window can be classified into two parts such as the day of the ovulation and the five days leading up to it. Ovulation is when the egg is released from the ovary which typically happens somewhere around the middle of the menstrual cycle.
The egg can be fertilized in the duration of 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. Whereas, sperm can live up to 2 days inside the female reproductive system. To increase the maximum chances of sperm meeting the egg, sexual intercourse should happen during the fertile window for effective results.
