New Delhi: Broadcasters of entertainment channels in India are expected to increase TV channel prices. India’s entertainment industry is dominated by the likes of Disney Star, Viacom 18, Zee Entertainment and Sony Pictures. All these big daddies of the country’s entertainment industry are likely to hike monthly subscription fees of their respective TV channels by an average of 5 to 8 per cent.
Why broadcasters are hiking prices of channel?
In January 2024, all the broadcasters had proposed jacking up bouquet rates of their respective TV channels by 10 per cent. But the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) requested them to defer their decision eyeing Lok Sabha Election 2024. Now that the General Elections are over, all the entertainment industry players are set to implement the impending hike in the prices of TV channel packages. Out of these big broadcasters, Viacom 18, had proposed to jack up the rates by highest of 25 per cent.
Before this, TV channel price hike was undertaken in the country in February 2023. Prior to this, the TV channel prices were stagnant for nearly three years.
How much TV channel broadcasters earn in India?
According to global data and business intelligence platform, ‘Statista’ India’s TV industry earned Rs 3,400 crore in 2023 with advertising and subscription revenues. While, 80 per cent of households in India had cable TV and satellite TV connections.
What other things might get costlier going forward?
Now, analysts expect the telecoms in the country to jump on bandwagon of those hiking the rates. The telecoms are expected to announce hike in mobile recharge tariffs. Very soon telecoms like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea may hike mobile recharge tariffs.
