Two names shortlisted by CAC for Team India coach job, confirms Jay Shah

New Delhi: BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that two names have been shortlisted for the role of Team India head coach. With Rahul Dravid’s tenure finally coming to an end as he signs off on a high with the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, the positions now remain vacant and a new coach will be announced soon. The BCCI had started the process of accepting applications for the job last month.

Several media reports have floated the name of Gautam Gambhir who is said to be the favourite to succeed Dravid and don the head coach hat for Team India. World Cup winner Gambhir had a successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their mentor, delivering them their third Indian Premier League (IPL0 title. It is no secret from Gambhir’s end as well who recently showed his interest in taking up the job.

A few reports also claimed that Gambhir was interviewed for the role last month and the BCCI secy has now confirmed that a new coach will join the senior men’s team before the Sri Lanka series and that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has shortlisted two names after conducting interviews for the big role. Shah, who is currently with the team as the Indian contingent is stranded in the hurricane-hit Barbados, said that they would make the call after reaching Mumbai.

“Both coach and selector appointment will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series,” Shah told select media, referring to the Zimbabwe tour that begins on July 6. Gambhir, WV Raman, and an overseas candidate have been shortlisted for the job reportedly.

Senior players in WTC and CT 2025

In what can be taken as great news, Shah also hinted that the senior Indian players would be part of the team for the Champions Trophy scheduled next year. The India cricket team currently goes through a transition phase with the new era kicking in but the presence of seniors will be intact for the upcoming big ICC events.

Shah said that the target is to win the World Test Championship and the Champions Trophy in 2025 and a similar squad would be announced. “The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there,” said Shah.

The culmination of the T20 World Cup 2024 notably brought the retirements of veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from the T20I format for India.

Jay Shah has confirmed that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has shortlisted two names after conducting interviews for the job of Team India head coach.
