UEFA Euro 2024: Germany vs Denmark preview, predicted XI, head-to-head and team news

New Delhi: Germany is all set to face Denmark at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund in the round of 16 of UEFA Euro 2024. With both the teams having their share of highs and lows in the tournament so far, this match is poised to be a captivating battle.

The hosts kicked off their campaign with a 5-1 demolition of Scotland before beating Hungary 2-0 to top their group. Die Mannschaft then drew 1-1 with Switzerland. In the previous edition of Euros, the Germans were knocked out of the Round of 16, losing 2-0 to finalists England.

On the other hand, Denmark kicked off their campaign with 1-1 draws with Slovenia and England. In their final group game they drew goalless with Serbia to finish second place in a highly forgettable Group C with three points. Hjulmand knows that quick improvements are necessary if his team hopes to upset the tournament hosts

They coincidentally share a seven-match unbeaten run with Germany in 2024 and have just one loss from their last 15 matches. Although they have made it through the group stage, De Rod-Hvide have largely failed to impress and need an improved performance to advance past the hosts.

Germany are unbeaten in seven games across competitions, winning five. They have had home advantage throughout the tournament and will hope that it propels them to victory. Denmark have struggled in the competition and could bow out this time, having made the semifinals in the previous edition.

Team News

Nagelsmann named the same side in every Group A match, but the hosts will be without the suspended Jonathan Tah, who has been booked twice. Nico Schlotterback is expected to replace him. Furthermore, Tah’s regular centre-back partner, Antonio Rudiger, has a slight thigh problem, but he returned to the team training on Friday and is expected to be in contention for today’s clash.

On the other hand, Denmark had Thomas Delaney back in the squad against Serbia after illness, and he could play a major role in the upcoming match. Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand was suspended due to a tally of yellow cards.

Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen are complete alternatives to replace him. Rasmus Hojlund is expected to keep his place in front despite managing only two shots across his three appearances at the tournament so far. Furthermore, Jonas Wind has done nothing up front since his delicate assistance to Christian Eriksen against Slovenia. So any of Andreas Skov Olsen, Kasper Dolberg or Yussuf Poulsen might take his position.

Head-to-Head

Germany and Denmark have locked horns 28 times prior to today’s match. Germany have won 15 while Denmark have won just eight matches. The first clash between the two was an international friendly dating back to 1912. Their latest face-off in a friendly match in June 2021, which ended 1-1 as Die Mannschaft recorded a fourth consecutive unbeaten outing against Denmark.

Germany emerged triumphant over Denmark during their last competitive showdown at the 2012 European Championship by 2-1 scoreline in the group phase. They are even the highest-scoring side in Euro 2024 with eight goals, while De Rod-Hvide have not kept a clean sheet in four games in the fixture.

Predicted lineup

Germany: Neuer; Kimmich, Schlotterbeck, Rudiger, Mittelstadt; Kroos, Andrich; Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz; Havertz

Denmark: Schmeichel; Andersen, Christensen, Vestergaard; Bah, Hojbjerg, Delaney, Maehle; Eriksen; Hojlund, Wind
