New Delhi: Phil Foden has returned home from Germany, where England is participating in UEFA Euro 2024. The English Football Association confirmed the English midfielder’s absence, saying the Manchester City player needed to go home after a “pressing family matter.” England, though, will hope the 24-year-old is back before their game against Slovakia on Sunday for their last-16 match.
Foden and his partner Rebecca Cooke confirmed they were expecting their third child through Instagram in April. The pair have two children, a son, Ronnie, five and a daughter, True, who is two.
Foden has made 37 appearances for England and started in all three of England’s group games at the tournament, including Tuesday’s draw over Slovenia. Manager Gareth Southgate finished top of Group C, collecting five points from three matches.
Wednesday’s final group game has confirmed that the Three Lions will face Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. Despite their qualification, the team’s overall performance has been worrying. Throughout the group stage, the team lacked potency to break out of difficult situations. They haven’t really posed a threat in attack.
Concerns have been raised about Jude Bellingham’s form and his inability to cope with Southgate’s strategy. In situations like this, England will hope to find a balance in the knockouts that doesn’t produce underwhelming performances despite having stars like Bellingham and Harry Kane. In the previous edition, England were runners-up and will hope to better their best performance in the tournament.
