UK: Cheating Husband Sues Apple After Wife Discovers ‘Deleted’ Messages Sent to Sex Workers

London: A UK-based businessman is suing tech giant Apple after his wife found a “deleted message” he had sent to a sex worker on their shared iMac. While retrieving messages believed to be ‘permanently’ erased, the wife filed for divorce, The Times reported.

The anonymous man, who had been using iMessage to communicate with sex workers, claimed he had deleted the messages, but they remained accessible on the iMac due to the synchronization of the family’s devices with the same Apple ID.

He argued that Apple did not inform its users that deleting a message on one product wouldn’t remove it from all linked devices.

“If you are told a message is deleted, you are entitled to believe it’s deleted,” the man told The Times.

Describing his divorce as “painful and raw,” the man explained that his wife found the messages and filed for divorce, costing him over 5 million pounds.

“If I had been able to talk to her rationally and she had not had such a brutal realization of it, I might still be married. It was a very brutal way of finding out [for my wife].”

Explaining that the lack of clarity from Apple about how message deletion works led to this situation, the man said, “In my opinion, it’s all because Apple told me my messages were deleted when they weren’t. If the message had said, ‘These messages are deleted on this device,’ that would have been a clue, or ‘These messages are deleted on this device only,’ that would have been even better.”

The man’s lawyer added, “Apple had not been clear with users as to what happens to messages they send and receive and, importantly, delete.”
