London: The United Kingdom will go to polls today for its general elections to elect its lawmakers. As many as 45 Million voters will cast their votes through ballots to elect 650 Parliamentarians. Timings for casting votes are 7:00 to 22:00 BST, at a nearby polling station.
This election will decide the fate of 20 months of Rishi Sunak’s tenure, who is currently the 5th Prime Minister in the 14 years of the Conservative era.
Elections being held this year are conducted with new boundaries of Constituencies, adjusted with population change. After Delimitation, 10 Seats increased in England’s quota taking the number to 543, while constituencies in Wales region dropped to 32. Slight changes occurred in Seats with Scotland from 59 to 57, while that of Northern Ireland stays the same to 18.
The results of the elections will be announced throughout the night and Friday morning. Opinion Polls are predicting a mega win for Keir Starmer’s Labour Party, while Indian Origin Rishi Sunak is facing a crushing defeat. YouGov’s Opinion Poll is Predicting 431 seats for Starmer’s Labour Party, majority mark to form the government is 326. As predicted by surveys, this would bring back the Labour Party in Power considerably after 1997.
If it goes the same way, these elections will end the 14 years of Conservative rule and will set the path for a new Starmer government to be formed at 10 Downing Street. The final results will be out by Friday morning.
The UK is currently facing a severe economic crisis following the Covid-19 Pandemic and the Ukraine war, which emerged as a big poll issue this year. Both Sunak and Starmer were seen convincing the voters on their economic plans throughout the campaign.
If the UK parliament sees a Strong Labour and a weaker Conservative Party, this could create a considerable impact on India-UK ties. The Stance of Sunak’s Conservatives was seen much in favour of the country and relations between the two also improved.
