New Delhi: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments are getting very popular every increasing day. The UPI is giving stiff competition to Visa as the payment system has surpassed the global payments giant.
UPI was launched just 9 years ago and has now become the world’s largest retail real-time payment system, News18 reported. On June 1, 64.4 crore transactions were recorded on UPI, and on June 2, the transactions surpassed 65 crore. Meanwhile, the report mentioned that Visa’s daily transaction volume in the financial year 2024-25 was 63.9 crore.
UPI transactions hit record high of Rs 25.14 lakh crore in May
According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the UPI transactions touched a record high of Rs 25.14 lakh crore in May 2025. The popular transaction interface recorded a growth of 5 per cent in comparison to April. In April, the UPI transaction value was Rs 23.94 lakh crore in April.
NPCI informed that in terms of volume, the UPI platform recorded 1,867.7 crore transactions in May, while April recorded 1,789.3 crore. The value of the transactions in May registered a growth of 23 per cent growth on an annual basis. It stood at Rs 25.14 lakh crore in May against Rs 20.44 lakh crore in the same month a year ago.
Commenting on the UPI growth story, Spice Money founder and CEO Dilip Modi said that the record-breaking milestone of 1,868 crore UPI transactions in May 2025 is a “resounding testament to India’s growing digital payment ecosystem and the deepening trust in UPI as a preferred mode of transaction”.
“Across urban centres and into the heart of India, digital finance is no longer aspirational, it has become foundational. The scale and spread of adoption underscore a silent digital revolution underway, driven by accessibility, simplicity, and trust in the system,” he said.
