Uruguay’s Luis Suarez calls time on International career ahead of World Cup qualifier

New Delhi: Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football, ending one of the finest careers in Uruguay. The 37-year-old is the all-time highest scorer for Uruguay, scoring 69 goals from his 142 appearances, and was part of the South American team in nine major tournaments.

Ahead of Uruguay’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay on Saturday, September 7th, in Montevideo, Suarez announced in a press conference that the match would be his final game for Uruguay. Suarez has been part of the national side since 2007 and played a crucial role in Uruguay’s appearance in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, as the team finished fourth in the competition. He was again at the centre of Uruguay’s 2011 Copa America win and was named the player of the tournament.

Speaking at a press conference, he mentioned that the decision wasn’t easy to make. However, he was ready to ‘step aside’ and felt he was prepared for the next step. He concluded that he was satisfied that he had given his absolute everything until the last game and was leaving the team on his terms.

Over the years, he has played for some of the finest clubs in the world, including Barcelona, where his partnership with Lionel Messi made the club a dominating side in La Liga. He was a dynamic and almost lethal attacker with a great goal-scoring sense. However, his style of play often earned him suspensions and controversies for his national and club teams.

Suarez’s latest outing with the team was during the 2024 Copa America third-place game against Canada. He was able to convert a penalty during the shootout and helped his side claim victory. More recently, he has been part of the Major League Soccer team Inter Miami CF alongside Messi. Two days ago, he scored a brace against Chicago for a 4-1 win.

Suarez is the all-time highest scorer from Uruguay with 69 goals and was crucial in helping the side lift 2011 Copa America.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
