New Delhi: Urvil Patel went berserk days after being ignored by franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega-auction. The Gujarat wicket-keeper batter who went unsold in the two-day mega-auction in Jeddah on November 24 and 25, broke Rishabh Pant’s record to hit the fastest century in T20 cricket by an Indian.
Patel smashed a 28-ball century against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on Wednesday, November 27 at the Emerald Heights International School Ground in Indore.
Urvil Patel’s explosive response to IPL 2025 snub
Urvil’s sensational unbeaten knock of 113 from 35 balls including seven fours and 12 sixes, helped Gujarat chase down a 156-run target with 58 balls to spare. Urvil broke the record of star Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant, who became the costliest player in IPL history on Sunday, November 24. Pant held the record of scoring a 32-ball hundred for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh in 2018 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Patel’s 28-ball century is the second-fastest overall in T20 cricket only behind Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who holds the record of notching up a 27-ball century against Cyprus.
Patel also holds the record for the second-fastest hundred by an Indian in List A cricket. In November 2023, Urvil reached the three-figure mark in just 41 balls for Gujarat against Arunachal Pradesh in Chandigarh. His knock was just a ball slower than Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball hundred for Baroda against Maharashtra in 2010.
Who is Urvil Patel?
Urvil, who hails from Mehsana, Baroda, Gujarat made his debut for Baroda six years ago in 2018 in a T20 against Mumbai in Rajkot before making his List A cricket debut in the same year. He had to wait for his first first-class appearance in the previous edition of the Ranji Trophy.
In IPL, Gujarat Titans bought Urvil for Rs 20 lakh for the 2023 season, but he didn’t get an opportunity to play a single match. After being released by the Titans in the auction pool, Urvil didn’t find any takers in the IPL 2025-mega auction. He has amassed 988 runs in 44 T20 matches at an average of 23.52 and a strike rate of 164.11 including a hundred and four fifties.
