Washington: In a step towards boosting its military presence in the Middle East, the United States has announced the deployment of a USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine towards the region. With this move. Pentagon is strongly indicating its posture amidst the rising tensions between Israel and Iran following the assassination of top commanders of Hezbollah and Hamas.
Nuclear Submarine Deployed In Middle East
USS Georgia which has been stationed in the Mediterranean Sea since July is heading towards the middle region, according to Penatagon.
As per the statement issued by the Pentagon, Defence Secretary Austin had ordered the Abraham Lincoln strike group to accelerate its deployment to the region.
“Secretary Austin reiterated the United States’ commitment to take every possible step to defend Israel and noted the strengthening of U.S. military force posture and capabilities throughout the Middle East in light of escalating regional tensions,” the statement added.
The US military had already said it will deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the Middle East as Washington seeks to bolster Israeli defenses.
USS Georgia Exudes Defence Prowess
The USS Georgia is equipped with a formidable arsenal, including 154 Tomahawk missiles and four torpedo tubes, and is capable of exceeding speeds of 20 knots when submerged. The vessel’s crew comprises 15 officers and 150 enlisted personnel.
The tensions between Israel and Iran are at their peak after Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Iran-backed Hamas, was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran on July 31, an attack that drew threats of revenge by Iran against Israel, which is fighting the Palestinian Islamist group in Gaza. Iran has blamed Israel for the killing. Israel has not claimed responsibility.
