US Open 2024: Alcaraz beats Li Tu in opening match, former champion Raducanu out in first round

New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz beat Australian Li Tu by 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Wednesday, August 28.

Four-times Grand Slam champion Alcaraz, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics, got off to a great start and won the first set by 6-2. The 3rd seed struggled against Li in the second set of the match but grew into the game as the match progressed and won the four-set battle.

The Australian player didn’t have much confidence before the match but after winning the second set he troubled Alcaraz. The Spaniard didn’t look in great rhythm during the game but managed to win it.

Emma Raducanu lost to Sofia Kenin in first round

Sofia Kenin defeated Emma Raducanu to advance to the second round of the US Open 2024. The former Australian Open champion came into the tournament with a 2-11 record on hard courts this season and managed to defeat Raducanu 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Kenin capitalized on Raducanu’s second serves and played with more aggression. The former Australian Open champion secured three consecutive breaks to take the first set 6-1. Raducanu showed resilience and won the second set by 3-6. Both players played brilliantly in the third set but Kenin’s aggression paid off, and a single break in the fifth game was enough for her to win the match.

Osaka breaks down in tears after defeating Jelena Ostapenko

Former champion Naomi Osaka beat Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2 to register her first top-10 win in four years. After the match, Osaka broke down in tears. The Japanese star missed last year’s US Open after giving birth to her daughter Shai. She suffered a first-round exit in US Open 2022 but made a great comeback against Ostapenko in 2024.
